Who we are

What this covers

This policy covers the public website, volunteer probes, and the measurement systems behind the observatory. Third-party measurement providers have their own terms for the feeds we use.

Website visitors

You do not need an account. Our hosting may keep basic request logs (such as IP address, browser type, page path, and time) so we can keep the site running and deal with abuse. We do not sell that information or use it for advertising profiles.

Cookies and analytics

We use cookies only when needed for the site or when you choose optional analytics. We do not use advertising cookies.

Strictly necessary. If we show a cookie banner, we store a small preference cookie (cc_cookie) so we remember Accept / Reject / custom choices. Hosting request logs are not advertising cookies.

Analytics (optional). When configured, we use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages are read, roughly where traffic comes from, and what breaks. That may set cookies such as _ga and _ga_*. Analytics scripts load only after you accept. You can Reject or change your mind anytime via Cookie preferences in the footer. Google processes this data under Google's Privacy Policy.

Measurement data

Scores and incidents come from public and partner network feeds (see Methodology) plus volunteer probes. We store and publish country-level series and summaries about network conditions, not profiles of people who browse this site.

Once we ingest, process, and aggregate that material into Net Surveil results (scores, incidents, charts, and related datasets), those results are ours to keep, use, and publish.

Volunteer probes

A probe sends network checks from inside a country: things like latency, packet loss, DNS problems, blocking signals, and rough speed. Traffic to us is encrypted. We identify a probe with a network-local pseudonym, not your name or email. This site only shows aggregates, such as how many probes reported from a country.

Participation is anonymous by design. We do not maintain a directory that maps a real person to their probe. Because of that, we cannot look up, export, or delete “your” probe history on request: we would not know which records were yours.

When you submit pulses, that telemetry becomes part of our measurement store. We own that submitted data and the aggregates and published results we build from it. You keep your device and any keys stored on it; resetting the client clears local identity material. More on running a node: Probes.

Where data lives

We use cloud computing and storage. Systems and data centres may be in the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States, or other regions, depending on the providers we use.

We do not sell personal data. Cloud and hosting providers process data for us so the service can run. Partners who use our APIs get observatory outputs (scores, incidents, aggregates), not a list of probe operators.

Age

The site and probe are for people aged 13 or older. Do not run a probe if you are under 13.
